LADY FALCONS LOSE HEARTBREAKER

First Assembly 17 -  Arborbrook 15  (Double OT)

The Falcons lost to this team at the beginning of the season by 15 points but you couldn’t tell by the way they played this game.  The Falcons came out with a suffocating defense and controlled the boards only to fall short on a 3 point field goal by First Assembly in double overtime.  First Assembly scored the first 2 points of the game but Mariah Hughes tied the game for the Falcons with 2 free throws.  Mariah added another free throw later in the quarter which ended with First Assembly holding a 5-3 lead.  Johanna Davidson knocked down a field goal in the in the second quarter but it would prove to be the only points scored by the Falcons as they entered the second half trailing 9-5.

The Falcons defense picked up momentum in the second half and the offense made a move.  Mariah added another 2 free throws and  Olivia Edge made a nifty drive to the basket to tie the game at 9.  The Falcons took their first lead of the game on a jump shot from the left of the lane by Mariah Hughes.  Mariah’s shots had been a little off the whole game and she raised her hand in the air and said, “finally”.  First Assembly scored only 2 points in the quarter but it was enough to tie the game at 11.

The 4th quarter started with First Assembly scoring early and Mariah answering.  Both teams were still playing excellent defense when Mariah was fouled and went to the line late in the quarter.  Mariah hit one of two for a 14-13 lead.  It looked like the lead may hold until First Assembly tied the game with a minute left.  Both teams threatened but could not score and we headed for overtime.  Neither team could score in the first overtime and the second OT started with the game still tied at 14.  First Assembly hit a huge three point shot with a little more than a minute left.  Mariah scored her 7th free throw of the game to pull the Falcons within 2.  The clock ticked down to 7 seconds when Coach called time out and set up a great inbounds play that the Falcons ran to perfection.  Mariah got the open shot from just above the free throw line but it wasn’t to be.  The final score was 17-15.

Mariah finished the game with 11 points, Olivia scored 2 points, and Johanna added 2.
